About the Event

Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Meet at the general store in Craven Saskatchewan at 11am and drive our vehicles to the site from there.

Leader: YQR Naturalist Dave Drummond

A free to attend guided hike of the beautiful Hidden Valley Nature Refuge. Perfect for first timers unfamiliar with the Qu'appelle valley and its Flora and Fauna. We'll meet at the general store in Craven Saskatchewan at 1pm and drive our vehicles to the site. This time we will focus on the weird world if lichens. Utilizing iNaturalist and locally produced publications we'll check bark, old logs, rock and bare soil for those unique fungal organisms known as lichen. We'll learn about the several forms they appear in, (crustose, foliose, fruticose etc. ) as well as fun facts and valuable identification tips and tricks. Using purified water we'll hydrate specimens with a spray bottle on the way up the trail and return to the spot on the return loop and observe the color changes caused by the lichens algal partners.
