As the final recipient Elizabeth Bekolay of One School One Farm summed it up, “I am thankful for the award for a number of reasons, the first one being an introduction to Catherine Verrall's book, and how it has inspired continued advocacy for a full systems view of how we grow and access food. We have a great responsibility to the world, living in one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, while trying to feed so many people. Protecting existing native habitat is the minimum requirement for avoiding system collapse. Increasing biodiversity is the next step. Showing the youth that we adults are trying to work together on this will help guide them in lessons and skills that will bring about prosperous future that IS possible.”

The Every Bite Project was inspired by the book Every Bite Affects the World: an earth care cookbook for joyful, mindful eating, by Catherine Verrall and friends, Friesen Press, 2014.

The Every Bite Local Action Awards were funded through the proceeds of book sales and legacy donations made to the Every Bite Project in memory of Catherine Verrall. The book can be purchased online from Friesen Press.

Catherine Verrall (1929 – 2021) was well known in Regina's environmental activist community. The Local Actions Awards honour her life-long commitment to environmental and social justice and education and continue the journey of growing awareness and action.
