About the Event
Mayor Masters is enthusiastically joining Nature Regina and friends on the first annual Crocus Walk at a re-discovered patch of native prairie right in the city limits. Everyone is invited to this free guided nature walk to see how native plants are thriving on part of a 68 acre piece of city property along Wascana Creek between Lewvan Drive and Sandra Schmirler Way. Park on east side of Caledonian Curling Club.
In recent years, naturalists have found a stunning variety of prairie flowers and grasses coming to life each spring on this property, providing refuge for bees and other insects. Meadowlarks, Swainson’s hawks, and Species at Risk including Barn Swallows and Loggerhead Shrikes have also been spotted there.
More and more of us are discovering the native prairie has the power to heal us and connect us to one another. Simply witnessing how the flowers and grasses at this site have held on and found a way to survive within the city begs a question: what would it take to protect and help this last patch of Regina’s native prairie flourish for future generations?
