About the Event

Leader: Dale Hjertaas

Hidden Valley is a beautiful refuge.  In early July the hillsides are alive with wildflowers, while Red-eyed Vireos, Spotted Towhees and Yellow Warblers sing from the wooded coulees.

The only way to explore Hidden valley is on foot and it is a bit of a climb to the top of the valley, so wear good shoes and possibly bring a hiking stick.  From the parking lot to the top of the valley is 74 metres vertically over a trail of almost 1 kilometre.  That sounds like a lot, but we will be stopping often so its fine for most members.

We will walk up the West Ridge Trail, stopping frequently to admire wildflowers and the insects that visit them.  I expect Prickly Pear, Wild Bergamont, Spreading Dogbane, Skeletonweed, Scarlet Gaura, Yellow Umbrella Plant, Western Red Lily, Blanketflower, milkvetches and Purple Prairie Clover to be among the many…
