Pine Island is a man-made island situated to the southwest of the Broad Street Bridge. Originally constructed in the 1930s with fill from the first excavation and further expanded and upgraded following the "Big Dig" Wascana lake expansion in 2004. In the 19 years since, the island’s miniature ecosystem is coming into its own. With many birds frequenting the open water in front of the island and mature trees giving cover to ground dwelling species. It also boasts a very expansive wall covered in early colonizing lichens! Come explore this little island with Dave Drummond, "The YQR Naturalist," and learn about trees, fungi, birds, and maybe a few mammals.
