About the Event

Join the YQR Naturalist, Dave on a hike of the islands of AE Wilson Park and discover a new side of Regina's natural areas. We learn about grasses, flowers, trees, water, soil and many other natural wonders. Family friendly event.

Participants can meet Dave in the soccer field parking lot at 12:30 PM.

First we will head towards the first bridge heading towards the prairie island. Well hopefully observe the last of the migratory waterfowl as we cross the bridges and gather on the island. Then we'll talk about the importance of willows at maintaining the stability of soil and how beavers eat them. Then we'll head towards the "Boreal island" and talk about the differences between deciduous and coniferous trees. Hopefully observe some Indigenous bird species as we move through the forested area. Describing the species we observe as we continue. Circling the perimeter of the island trail well observe invasive Loosestrife and learn how identify it and report it. We'll loop back towards the way we came but take the second bridge heading south west. Their We'll observe the beavers lodge and hopefully the beavers themselves and learn fun facts about beavers. Heading back towards the parking lot We'll hopefully observe some hares and describe them and learn about how they survive the winter. Reaching the parking lot we will have a Q and A.
